When Your Work Is Wellness but You're Not Well: A Somatic Retreat for Teachers

Somatic Retreat for Yoga Teachers, Lunita Jungle Retreat, Riviera Maya, Mexico

A note from Lunita: we're proud to host this retreat. The healers, therapists, and bodyworkers who pour into everyone else deserve a place to be poured back into. The words below are by the retreat's facilitator, Sami Zanfagna of Uprise Hot Yoga (Freeport, Maine); see the full retreat details.

For yoga teachers & instructors who secretly feel exhausted

You teach people how to breathe, move, and regulate stress. From the outside, it looks like you have wellness figured out. But many yoga teachers, fitness instructors, and movement facilitators carry a quiet exhaustion few people see.

The hidden cost of holding space professionally

Holding space for others can create an unconscious habit of over-functioning. You can move through a challenging practice without actually experiencing it somatically, your body learns to stay "on" all the time, energetically attuned to everyone else while quietly ignoring your own needs. Eventually, even your healing practices begin to feel performative, and the fallout shows up as depletion, creeping self-doubt, or numbness.

It's not a lack of self-care. It's a nervous system organized around output.

The issue often isn't that you need more self-care, it's that your nervous system has become organized around output, stuck in constant "up-regulation." At Call of the Wild, based in the principles of Somatic Experiencing and relational work, we explore what happens when the body no longer has to perform wellness, but actually experiences safety from within, the chance to stop holding everyone else. (For the broader view, see what a jungle somatic retreat can heal.)

You can only take students as far as you've gone yourself

We can only take our students as far as we're willing to go ourselves; blind spots left unaddressed quietly hold us back. Deep in the jungle this January, you'll experience guided somatic practices, nervous-system education, embodiment work, rest, nature, and authentic connection with others who understand the weight of always being "the strong one", alongside breathwork and temazcal. It speaks equally to healers and therapists and mothers and caregivers.

In short

Frequently asked questions

Who is this retreat for?

Yoga teachers, fitness instructors, movement facilitators, and other wellness professionals who hold space for a living and are quietly running on empty (and caregivers more broadly). If you're usually 'the strong one' in the room, this week was designed for you. No specific certification is required.

What is Somatic Experiencing, and how is it different from regular self-care?

Somatic Experiencing is a body-based approach to releasing unresolved stress and survival patterns held in the nervous system. Unlike self-care that adds more activities to a full plate, somatic work changes how you relate to your body in the present moment, shifting the underlying patterns that create burnout, rather than just managing it.

Is this a teacher training or CE course?

No, it's not a training, certification, or continuing-education program. It's a restorative somatic retreat, and the intention is the opposite of skill-building: you get to stop performing, stop facilitating, and actually receive. A more regulated nervous system naturally makes you a better teacher.

When and where does it take place, and what's included?

January 21 to 26, 2027 (five nights) at Lunita Jungle Retreat in Puerto Morelos, Riviera Maya, about 40 minutes from Cancún Airport. All-inclusive from $2,450 per person (per person, not per cabana): accommodation, three local/organic meals daily, round-trip airport transfers, guided somatic practices, nervous-system education, daily movement, a traditional Mexican blessing ceremony, a private cenote tour, and an on-site temazcal.

Do I need yoga or somatic experience to attend?

No. All movement and somatic practices are accessible to beginners and adaptable to your body. You don't need to arrive 'ready', you only need to show up.

How do I reserve, and are payment plans available?

A 50% deposit reserves your place; you'll then choose a private or shared cabana and receive a welcome packet. Payment plans with even monthly installments are available. The first five guests to register save $300, and referring a friend earns $100 off for both of you.
