An ayahuasca ceremony at Lunita is a guided, all-night journey held in an open-air space in the Riviera Maya jungle, beginning with a careful intake, moving through the medicine itself (visions, emotional release, and often purging), and closing with morning integration. This is what to expect in the ceremony, who it's for, and how to prepare. If you're ready to plan dates, see our ayahuasca retreat in Mexico; for the basics of the medicine, start with what ayahuasca is.
How Lunita honors ayahuasca's roots
Ayahuasca has been used for generations by Amazonian peoples as a sacred "teacher plant." At Lunita we hold that lineage with respect, working with experienced facilitators who bring authenticity and care to each ceremony, in a setting designed to support, not rush, the work.
What to expect in your ceremony
Preparation and intake
Every participant completes a detailed intake so the team understands your health and emotional needs and can keep the ceremony safe and personalized. This is also where contraindications are caught.
The ceremony space
Ceremony takes place in a tranquil open-air jungle setting, guided by facilitators and supported by sacred song and instruments. The medicine is served in measured doses for a gradual, workable journey, and you are supported throughout the night.
During the ceremony
You may experience visions (vivid, symbolic imagery), emotional release (crying, laughing, relief), and physical purging through vomiting, viewed across traditions as part of the cleansing. Each person's journey is different, and difficulty is often where the work lives.
After the ceremony
Integration is essential. The next morning, facilitators help you process what arose and find the insight and healing in it, the part that turns a powerful night into lasting change.
What ayahuasca can open
Participants commonly report emotional healing (releasing suppressed emotion and unresolved trauma), spiritual awakening and a renewed sense of purpose, greater mental clarity, and a feeling of physical and energetic reset. For the research and the deeper picture, see ayahuasca and healing.
Who should avoid ayahuasca
This medicine isn't for everyone. Avoid ayahuasca if you have schizophrenia or psychosis, serious heart conditions or high blood pressure, a history of stroke, or you take antidepressants or other interacting medications, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Lunita's intake exists to catch exactly these, and the team will be honest with you. The legal context, separately, is covered in is ayahuasca legal in Mexico.
