Before Lunita welcomed a single guest, we asked the land for permission. On May 1, 2021, we held a ceremony with a kahtal alux to greet the Aluxes, the small guardian spirits the Maya say watch over the jungle. The vision had arrived years earlier, in February 2016. This is the story of a retreat center that began by listening instead of building.
Who the Aluxes are
In Maya tradition, the Aluxes are small guardian spirits of the forest and the milpa. Treat the land with respect and they look after it with you. Ignore them and they turn playful, hiding things, making mischief. We do not present this as a costume or a theme. It is simply how this part of the world understands the jungle, and we chose to honor it.
Why we asked first
The land was here long before us. Lunita is 5,000 square meters of built space held inside 80,000 square meters of preserved jungle that we steward rather than own. When the ground you stand on is that much older than your plans, it feels right to begin with consent, not a bulldozer.
The ceremony
On the first of May, 2021, a kahtal alux led the greeting. There were offerings, words, and a quiet asking. People who were there still talk about how the place felt afterward, lighter somehow, as if a door had been left open for us on purpose.
How it still shapes Lunita
We leave the jungle the jungle. We keep small offerings. And we tell guests this story on their first night, not to convince anyone of anything, but because it is true and it is ours.
