How can you slow down and embrace conscious living?

Modern life is busy. We’re all guilty of letting the fast pace of the world around us dictate our own lives, and often end up feeling frazzled and burnt out as a result.
It’s certainly not easy to slow down, but doing so can bring huge benefits to your mental and physical health. If you’re finding yourself feeling jumpy, tired or on edge all the time, then it might be time for a seismic shift in your approach.
In this post, we explore how to slow down and embrace a conscious approach to living.
Reduce your screen time
Globally, we’re spending 4 hours and 47 minutes staring at a screen on average. Of course, some of this is unavoidable – for example, work – and some of it helps us stay connected, such as messaging friends and family. However, the statistics show that we’re spending about 25% of our time on screens, which is far beyond what is necessary.
Screens, especially social media, shorten our attention span and are designed to be addictive. If you’ve ever experienced the feeling of your brain running at super speed after a mindless scroll, you’ve felt this.
To embrace conscious living, it’s therefore important to unplug and reduce screen time to what is necessary and what is beneficial. Our devices can be a tool for education and connection, but only if we stop letting them cause us anxiety.
Slow your schedule
If you’re someone who is guilty of packing a lot of tasks into every spare hour, then you probably find it hard to settle. Even when you have free time, you might find yourself deciding to tackle some admin tasks, or start a new home project.
Slowing down and living consciously requires giving your brain and body space to breathe and just exist. Rest is necessary to soothe our body and soul, and is productive – just not in the same way that you might be used to.
Try to avoid scheduling tasks back to back, or saying yes to multiple social commitments over a short period of time. Plan in time to rest, and stick to your commitment to yourself. Just because you have a free gap in your calendar doesn’t mean you need to say yes.
Embrace taking the long way
So many modern products are designed to shortcut our lives. We can buy so many different types of food, order it on our phones, get AI tools to choose presents for our loved ones, and take supplements to give us nutrients instead of altering our diets.
Again, not all of these products are bad. Some make our lives easier and make tasks more accessible, and that’s something to embrace. However, be wary of taking too many shortcuts, and be conscious of what you’re eating and using in daily life.
Take joy in embracing a slower approach when it comes to practical tasks. Take one day a week to cook a meal from scratch, for example, or avoid using chemicals while gardening and take the time to pull up weeds by hand.
These small changes help you connect with the world around you and force you to slow down. By doing so, you’ll have the chance to see so many small things that you would have missed had you taken the shorter route.
Simplify daily living
We live in a world that values material goods, and encourages us to buy and consume more. It’s hard to resist when we feel like we need these things to keep up with our peers or to just simply live modern life.
However, there comes a tipping point where having too much simply crowds your home and your brain, forcing you to make too many choices and feel overwhelmed.
Slow and conscious living means stripping back to what you need, and focusing on what actually enhances your life. Work out what makes you happy and keep that; everything else is only adding to your busy mind.
